The system instrumentation applies alternating voltages to the electrodes of the Proceptor® in-line sensor, generating electric fields which cause currents to flow in the process material. At any given frequency, the current which is in phase with the applied voltage is proportional to the conductivity of the process material, and the current which is out of phase with the applied voltage is proportional to the permittivity of the process material. The system measures these currents, taking into account currents which also flow in the ceramic body of the Proceptor in-line sensor, and calculates the associated electrical properties of the process material.

The permittivity and conductivity measurements are calibrated measurements reported in standard engineering units. Calibration can be verified by measurements with reference fluids using the optional test stand.

System Diagram

Permittivity and conductivity are well-defined material properties that vary among materials due to differences in their molecular and other structure. Measurements of these electrical properties serve to identify the compositions of chemical mixtures.
